How to Pick a Blog Name

How to Pick a Blog Name

Oh, how to pick a blog name. Seems so easy, yet so hard. If you have severe writer’s block, then here’s some ideas that’ll help jog your mind to pick your blog name. Picking out your blog name is a lot of pressure. Trust me, I know. It’s like picking out a name for your child before your child is even made or picking out a phrase that totally embodies you as a person. And I’m sure you’re a really cool person that cannot be embodied in a phrase.

Here’s some things you can do to help you pick a blog name:

1. Use Adjectives that Describe Yourself

Jot down some adjectives that describe you: sporty, traveler, spontaneous, smart, etc. If you’re having difficulty thinking of unique adjectives, grab a thesaurus and see what you find!

2. Think of Your Favorite Hobbies

If you want to build your blog on your favorite hobby then you should definitely think about putting it in your blog name. This way people will know what exactly your blog is about. Ang Around The Globe implies that I love traveling which gives people an idea about what my posts are about.

If you love sewing or the outdoors or traveling, then use that hobby to make a play on words.

3. Use Your Name or Nickname

Using your name or nickname will make your blog personable. It’ll give people some ideas on what they can call you or what they can refer to your blog as. Using your name mixed with different adjectives or hobbies can make a good blog name.

In my blog name I use Ang, which is short for my name Angelique. Since my name isn’t very common, a lot of people get confused as to how to spell it. I used a nickname to avoid spelling problems in my real name.

4. take inspo from your favorite books

Pick your favorite book or the book you are reading right now. Flip through it to find some words that’ll get your creative mind thinking. Authors are your friends so use their verbiage to help think of your blog name!

5. Take Inspo from Your Favorite Movies

Movie titles or code names in movies can make some really kickass blog names. Rewatch your favorite movie or watch a new one, and listen to some of the names and words used in its script. It can be just the thing you need to create your next blog name!

6. Wander Around Your Town to Look for Ideas

A little walk through your town or city can result in some major inspiration. Go to your favorite coffee shop or restaurant and find something that describes you. Find something that you feel can be a part of you, something you can grow with.

Going to some of your favorite places around town can help flex your creative mind into thinking of your best yet blog name.

7. Use a Play on Words

Try thinking of something catchy or using a play on words. Phrases that use alliteration (words that start with the same letter) make good blog names because they’re easy to remember.

8. Location

Using your geographical location in your blog name can be to your advantage. For example, American Student Abroad could be a good blog name for a niche that targets american students that go abroad. However, don’t do this if it doesn’t allow you to grow with your blog or doesn’t embody you as a person. If you lived in California for a year, don’t make your blog name California Girl, etc.

9. Keep It Short and Sweet

Try keeping it below 20 letters otherwise your URL gets way too long. A sweet spot is around 10-15 letters because its easy to remember and easy to type into a URL search bar. If you’re trying to promote your blog through word of mouth, you won’t want to spell out anything super duper long.

10. Easy to Say Out Loud

If you can’t say it easily out loud then don’t use it as your blog name. You want to be able to say it easily so people can easily jot it down without you having to spell it out. Use easy to spell words and easy to say words. Avoid using any homonyms, for example your and you’re, to avoid people from spelling things wrong. Ears hear differently then what a phrase might look like on paper.

11. Avoid Numbers and HypHens

You want to be able to say your blog name easily so other people can write it down and remember it easily. Here’s an example of something you should not do in convo:

Potential follower: “Oh you have a blog, so cool! What’s it called?”
Me: “Ang hypen around hyphen the hypen globe the number 21 dot com”

Do you now see how difficult that can be. Try your best to avoid numbers and hyphens and try creating a blog name that you can swiftly say out loud.

12. Leave Room to Grow

You’ll want to be able to grow with your blog. Don’t make your blog name something so specific that you won’t be able to use it for future ventures. Ang Around The Globe is perfect for me because everything I do blog wise or business wise is a way to fund my love for traveling.

Outgrowing a blog name is similar to outgrowing clothes. You might really be interested in it now and want to write about it now, but in a year or two you’ll want a new one. Try thinking of something that will allow you to grow, no matter what you want to write about.

13. Don’t Rush It

The perfect blog name will come at the right time. For some it’ll take a day to come up with the perfect name, but for others it can take weeks. Be patient, look around, and be open. Your blog name will come when you least expect it.

So there you have it, my list of things you can do to help you pick a blog name. These are just a few things that helped me create my own blog name and some of the things to help me thing of creative things to write. I’d love to hear about some of the ways you came up with your blog name! Until then, I’ll see you in the next post!

Xoxo,

Angelique
